After Milton County was created and the City of Alpharetta was named the county seat in1858, their new courthouse was built by H. B. Wallace for $5,400. It measured 44’ x 56’ and had four fireplaces.
After Union Soldiers burned and destroyed records in the courthouse, its condition declined quickly and the court was moved to the Harris Hotel on the NW corner of Academy and Main Street where was located prior to the City Center development.

W. B. Willis built a new building in 1878 using local materials at a cost of $4,849. With economic collapse of the Great Depression, Milton County was forced to merge with Fulton County in 1932. The Courthouse was no longer needed and due to poor quality materials, the abandoned building began to decline and was demolished in 1955.

After many years of planning, a new City Hall was built as a part of the new City Center and opened in October, 2014, at a cost of $18 million. The old Municipal building was then raised several months later to make way for Phase II of the City Center development that will be mixed-use combining businesses and residences. The six-acre site was sold to developers for $6.6 million in 2015.
